West Midlands Tatters, September 2006

Chris Woolley established the group in 1994 with a few people meeting in each others' houses. Since then, thanks to her dedication and organisational skills, it has gone from strength to strength. Now there are about 30 tatters in the group.

The group has a Tatting Day at Stourbridge near Birmingham three times a year. This happens on the third Saturday of February, June and September.

At each meeting there is a workshop, usually on tatting but sometimes we tackle a different craft. No need to worry about materials as Chris always makes sure we have a supplier such as Mary Helen, Lyn Morton or Roseground.

At this meeting in September we had a special visitor from Denmark, Inga Madsen, whose book "Tatted Animals" is very popular. Inga (seen here teaching) did a workshop on a tatted/beaded brooch, and her friend Lis, also from Denmark, was 'helper'. In honour of Inga's visit our members spontaneously brought along a great selection of work for the display table!
New member Keith brought along these examples of his tatting. The pattern for the bracelet, which is beaded, is in Newsletter 54.
David makes these bookmarks for charity (see article in Newsletter 54). A great idea for a fund-raiser and an eye-catching way of displaying them.
Show off your tatting and use up some motifs at the same time! I (Sally) got the idea from one of Mary Donohoe's Tatting Exchanges. You buy a ready-made bag and stick on the motifs.
A circle of flowers from Glenys. A great way to make a quick picture using lots of motifs attached to fabric stretched across a frame that works like an embroidery frame.
Brenda Rewhorn's elaborately tatted boxes. These fit inside one another like Russian dolls, and each demonstrates a different tatting technique. Brenda's book "ABC of Tatting Techniques" features patterns for the boxes.
This time we had a display of spinning wheels, and we were all encouraged to have a go - a good contrast to tatting. The spinners here are David, Sue and John.
