Edwige Renaudin

Yvain the Knight with the Lion

This must be a first - an illuminated manuscript in tatting! Here we have a scene from one of the stories of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table: Sir Yvain has gone into the chapel to rescue a damsel in distress, leaving outside by the stream his horse and his lion (devoted to Yvain after being rescued by him from a fire-breathing serpent). The story was written by the French court poet Chretien de Troyes in the 12th century.

Edwige did the whole picture, apart from the lettering, in tatting. She took the design for the lion from an illumination, the horse (slightly modified) from a tapestry, and used various illuminations for the rest.

Anyone going to Horstmar will be able to see the actual picture as Edwige is taking it there.
